Autonomous mining arrives; Rio Tinto announces plans to deploy a fleet of automated trucks.
Abstract
The article reports on the plan of Rio Tinto to double its autonomous mining truck fleet at the Yandicoogina iron ore mine in the Pilbara region in Western Australia in April 2012. A Komatsu truck fleet will dump waste ore for a two-year testing following the move. A single worker in a portable office will be in charge of the trucks. Also noted is the drill rig testing being conducted by Rio Tinto.
