- Abstract
The article "Journal Club" discusses various studies on medical therapies in older patients. One study examines the benefits of bisphosphonates in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis and shows that statistically, an improvement occurs only after about a year. Another study examines the benefits of beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors in older patients with heart failure and shows that these therapies are associated with lower mortality. A third study examines the outcomes of heart transplants in patients over 70 years old and shows that age is not an independent risk factor for increased mortality. Finally, a study on the surgical approach to primary hyperparathyroidism is discussed, which shows that parathyroidectomy is associated with a lower risk of fractures compared to medical therapy.
