- Authors

- Abstract
This article examines how Russian poet Vasily Zhukovsky negotiates some of the more challenging and ambiguous stanzas of Thomas Gray's Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard with an eye to what this might reveal about his interpretation of the poem. The interpretation of the poem by signifies an important part of Zhukovsky's career and in the development of Russian lyric. The translation of the Elegy gives Gray a place in Russian literary history that deserves to be recognized as a measure of his poem's international acclaim and influence. Although Zhukovsky faithfully translates Gray's form, style and tone, he does so in a way that forecloses some possibilities of Gray's poetic argument while creating others.
