The article focuses on the growing use of complete genome sequencing as a diagnostic tool. It mentions the two clinical sequencing programmes launched in January 2012 at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) which aim to identify the causes of rare genetic disease mostly in children. It discusses its usefulness in diagnosis and treatment for cancer as well as its cost-effectiveness.
