- Authors
SOPER, KERRY
- Abstract
In this article the author examines aspects of the U.S. comic strip "Pogo," created by Walt Kelly. The central focus of the article is on Kelly's appropriation of African American folktales and how they informed his political and artistic viewpoints. These are considered within the larger scope of white borrowings of folk images from minority culture. A number of topics are addressed including the use of black speech and stories by a number of artists and writers including Joel Chandler Harris, Mark Twain, and the animators of the Walt Disney Company.
