- Title
LAZARUS AND MICYLLUS: GRECO--ROMAN BACKGROUNDS TO LUKE 16:19-31.
- Authors
Hock, Ronald F.
- Abstract
The article offers critical analysis of the New Testament the parable of the rich man and Lazarus found in Luke 16:19-31. A review of previous scholarship on the parable is given. An alternative interpretation is then offered, taking into account Greco-Roman social ethics surrounding wealth. Particular parallels are made between Jesus' teaching and the Stoic philosopher Lucian of Samosata's tale of the cobbler Micyllus and the wealthy man Megapenthes.
