- Abstract
Background: Lung cancer is the most frequent cancer in the word. There are two types of lung cancer: small cell lung cancer and non - small cell lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer is an aggressive disease but, also, it has a good response at chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Material and method: We present the case of a 55 years male patient diagnosed with small cell lung cancer from the Oncology - Palliative Care Department of "St. Luke" Hospital in Bucharest, from the moment of diagnostic (July 2016) to the present (February 2017). We present the specific treatment (palliative chemotherapy, palliative radiotherapy and osteoclasts inhibitors), and also, symptom treatment - pain treatment (strong opioids, anticonvulsant and anti-depressive drugs). Discussion and conclusions: Management of a small lung cancer patient means a complex treatment: specific oncological treatment (palliative chemo- and radiotherapy), symptoms treatment and psychological assistance. Involvement of the patients' family in the care process is also important. Because small cell lung cancer has an unfavourable prognosis, quality of life of patients with this disease is most important. Involvement of a palliative care medical team, of patients' family, and specific palliative oncological treatment, and pain management contribute in maintaining of a good quality of life of this patient till present (February 2017).
