- Abstract
This paper focuses on errors in second language learning and how to treat and exploit them in EFL instruction. Errors are indicators of the progress in second or foreign language acquisition and point out the ways learners find solutions to the problems they encounter in that process. We will discuss some possible ways teachers can evaluate errors and use them to facilitate their students' improvement. The first step to this is how to approach analysing learner errors: collection, classification and explanation of sources. It is important to distinguish between developmental errors and those due to first (and/or second) language influence. Each will require specific approach, depending also on the level and age of the learners. It also discusses if and how teachers can benefit from research on contrastive analysis for the purpose of learner language evaluation.
