- Abstract
This paper focuses on the phenomenon of dyslexia as a specific language difficulty and its pedagogical implications. The history of reading instruction provided insights into the longitudinal effects of varied reading approaches based on the understanding of this specific learning difficulty. The complexity of the underpinning causes and symptoms resulted in a variety of methods developed to meet the needs of the struggling readers. The finding that a given individual will exhibit a cluster of symptoms different from another dyslexic individual cluster leads us to the issue of the individualized approach as the most appropriate teaching approach for use with children with dyslexia.
