The proton is a subatomic particle with characteristics that make it particularly effective in radiation therapy. Because of a proton's high linear energy transfer and the Bragg peak, a sharp increase in dose can be delivered at a particular tissue depth with minimal exit dose. This article provides an overview of proton therapy use in the United States.
