- Abstract
Objective: The growing concern with environmental issues, crystallized by the most recent jurisdictional protections and strengthened by several international agreements, imposed a greater appreciation of cultural assets, among which is the archaeological heritage. Recognition of the vulnerability of this heritage has stimulated the development of environmental public policies aimed at its conservation, which have the support of guarding institutions for the study and conservation of archaeological assets. Therefore, the objective of this research was to demonstrate the relationship that the Amazon Museum of the Federal University of Amazonas has with the environmental public policies that govern the protection of archaeological material, being carried out in a legal-descriptive way, as it presents the legal foundations that guide public policies for the preservation of archaeological heritage, while describing the processes provided for by law that make the Amazon Museum an institution for the custody of archaeological material. Methodology: The methodology used in this research was the deductive method, starting from general aspects to reach the particular; as for the means, the research was bibliographical, using laws, decrees, ordinances and normative instructions; as for the purposes, the research was qualitative, since the research did not aim to bring numerical data or percentiles. Results: It was concluded that the Amazon Museum plays an important role in the preservation of archaeological heritage, acting strictly within the guidelines of public environmental policies. In order to do so, we identified the way in which the Amazon Museum effectively participates in public policies for the preservation of the environment, especially the archaeological heritage under its care. Contributions: The study brings to light the work carried out by the Amazon Museum, which plays an important role in safeguarding the archaeological material cultural heritage of the Amazon, considered the "lungs of the world". The research, based on legal texts, brings great contributions to present and future generations, since there is an imminent risk of the loss of national identities, in which, when losing contact with the past that brought us here, we lose the notion where can we get from. Hence the importance of keeping the institutions of preservation and custody of the heritage active, aiming to protect the living memory of the past.
