- Abstract
It is a known fact that new media has an effect on public discourse and communication in the society in the last years. Facebook and Twitter which allow political action and campaigns to take place independently among new media, are a better way to achieve public realm. Such as, a person who has never been in politics can attend to a conversation. Because the power of Facebook and Twitter lies beneath the ability to allow users to be connected and organised. Thus, citizens have means of communication in stating their opinions to the political agents or to make themselves heard when political candidates do not represent their political stance. Let us immediately state that, political participation encompasses a broad area of attitudes and activities ranging from a simple curiosity to an intensive action. Thinking this to be nothing more than voting in elections would be an incomplete and incorrect perception. It represents a concept that determines the situations, attitudes, and behaviors of citizens in the face of the political structure. In this context, Facebook and Twitter have the potential to expand Habermas's concept of The Public Sphere. The public sphere in question stands for an area that is distinct from the political structure, where political involvement can occur in modern societies with democratic legitimacy through the medium of speech, and where critical discourses against the political structure are produced and circulated. Therefore, political communication refers to any kind of communication that is political. With the increase of the number of problems and actors in the field of politics, the expansion of the political arena, and the increase of emphasis on the public with the media, the area allocated to communication has been growing. Thus, aforementioned Facebook and Twitter are becoming additional channels in the field of political communication. In our study, after conducting the literature search that makes up the hypothetical and intellectual infrastructure on "public sphere" and "political communication", the relationship between "public sphere" and "political communication" will be theoretically determined and new media tools that emerged with new communication technologies will be discussed in a critical aspect through the examples "Facebook and Twitter".
