- Abstract
In every election, 15-25% of the people in Turkey are unable to reflect their preferences on the TGNA due to the election threshold. The opposition party offers to use the d'Hondt system which is free of threshold or to carry out a complete proportional representation. The government party on the other hand offers a narrow-region election free of threshold and uses this against the opposition party. The Prime Minister addresses the public, "For years, they have demanded an election free of threshold. Now we have offered to replace it with a run-off narrow region system, but they are all evading." In this way, the Prime Minister is trying reconcile opposition parties which ask for a democratic election law. In this article, the Proportional representation system will be explained and discussed with the exclusive intention to refer to history in a period when the general parliamentary elections are close, the domestic-politics is rather unsteady and the country is about to experience an economic crisis as well as a political crisis.
