- Abstract
There is evidence suggesting that boxing causes serious injuries and it is very violent. However, there is also evidence suggesting boxing does not have such negative aspects. Due to this contradiction, athletes and their parents may have difficulties in finding accurate scientific information and they may have negative attitudes towards boxing. Their negative attitudes can also affect boxing coaches. In this context, the primary aim of this research was to examine boxing from the perspective of boxing coaches. The second aim was to determine athletes' and their parents' attitudes towards boxing from coaches' perspective. The study group consisted of eight boxing coaches. Individual interviews were conducted with the participants. The interviews were recorded on the voice recorder and then transcribed. Analyses were performed by content analysis in NVIVO 11. Five themes emerged. These themes are; "reasons for starting boxing", "benefits of boxing", "concerns and problems in boxing", "coaches' practices for the concerns and problems" and "coaches' suggestions." To conclude, there are many reasons to participate in boxing and boxing has cognitive, social, emotional, physical/health and career/financial benefits. Also, individuals have many concerns about participating in boxing. These are; decrease in academic performance, sports injury and illness, deterioration in appearance or pain, tough diet practices, thinking that boxing is not suitable for women and children, women and men training together, thoughts that boxing is unhygienic and that parents will not support boxing and thoughts that boxing can make children bellicose. According to coaches, athletes and parents have many erroneous beliefs about boxing. Using various methods to deal with these concerns and problems, the coaches also offered some suggestions.
