Over 50,000 cases of AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) have been reported to date in the United States, and between 1 and 1.5 million persons are estimated to be infected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Facts about the disease and its epidemiology are reviewed, and the implications for families and human service professionals are discussed.
