- Abstract
Pre-service teachers in the state of Texas are required to pass the Examination for the Certification of Educators in Texas (ExCET). This study was designed to examine select characteristics of minority teacher education students taking the professional development section of the ExCET and to collect self-reported factors contributing to test success or failure. Results indicated that undergraduate GPA was a significant, but weak predictor (R2=.119) of performance on the ExCET. Most students indicated that the acquisition of test taking strategies and participating in practice sessions contributed to a positive outcome. Contributions to a negative outcome were less homogeneous. The article makes several recommendations to improve student performance on the exam.
