- Abstract
This article discusses the history of design education in India. The complexity of Indian design education and design practice in India is not just unity in diversity, but also the simultaneous existence of the past traditions with the contemporary. In the early nineteenth century during the colonial rule, Great Britain introduced art schools to the country, that tried to include craft design in the curricula. After Independence in 1947, India focused on rapid scientific and technological development. The first major industrial design institution to be established in India was the National Institute of Design at Ahmedabad in 1961. Indian design education realized that it is more important to make one learn than to teach one and much of the design education in India is project-based.
