Although the velocipede's heyday was brief, Cropper and Whidden end this fascinating study by drawing a link between the national craze and the creation of the Tour de France decades later. Velocipede races were held at St Cloud in 1868, and Napoleon III's young son rode his own velocipede so often that he was known as "the little boy who pedalled everywhere". As Cropper and Whidden observe, the velocipede's popularity coincided with the rise of feminist movements in late 1860s France.
