- Abstract
Objectives. To investigate the link between the prevalence of the initial 3 minimum metabolic syndrome (MS) criteria at diagnosis moment and later on-set of obesity among an adult Romanian population group. Methods. This is an epidemiological observational cohort type I study using each patient's medical history. MS was defined according to the IDF criteria as well as the NCEP ATP III and EGIR ones in order to determine the syndrome from early on-set. Data were processed using SPSS version 15. The patients were followed for a period of 8 years. Results. Partial results show the demographic characteristics of the group, a total of 150 patients enlisted, 49 males and 101 females, with a mean age at starting pointof 61.06 years (standard deviation of +/-12.30). The prevalence of MS was 44.7%. At the moment of diagnosis, the prevalence among MS criteria is: raised cholesterol found in 66.7%, raised triglycerides in 36.0%, BMI>30 in 18.7% and raised fasting plasma glucose in just 16%. Regarding hypertension, raised systolic and diastolic values were found in 85.3%. The fluctuation of body weight between the initial moment to the end point of the study shows a significant difference between the BMI distribution (p<0.05) with a positive direction. Conclusion. The higher frequency of dyslipidemia and hypertension criteria was noticed, leading to a greater association of these two with the obesity on-set, when taking into consideration the positive direction of BMI observed during follow-up.
