- Abstract
Brazil is one of the countries with the greatest biological diversity of the planet and home to between 15 and 20% of the total number of species. Part of this wealth has been lost inexorably, so it is important to know in depth the natural heritage of the country, to identify the main factors that threaten them and establish priorities for action. The knowledge, supported in scientific rigor, constitutes a powerful tool to engage, in a definitive way, the action of the government in the planning and conservation process, and thus, being able to introduce instruments of control, surveillance and more effective protection. As a federated country, that is, with different levels of government which are part of the Brazilian Government: federal, state, and municipalities, municipal action on environmental conservation is increasingly necessary. In this sense, the city of Sorocaba, through the Municipal Secretariat of the Environment, has developed a series of guided mechanisms in public policies (plans, creation of parks and botanical garden, protected areas, environmental education and "Sorocaba a Cidade da Biodiversidade" program) that are successful cases to local biodiversity agenda and that can be replicated to other municipalities.
