- Abstract
The article discusses the notion of sympathy in English translations from 1660 to 1750 of the shipwreck section of the epic poem "De Rerum Natura" by the poet Lucretius. Topics include the role of emotion in Enlightenment-era notions of poetry, the relation of rhythm to emotion in the translations, and the Epicurean philosophical background of the poem.
