- Abstract
Social representations might strongly influence the meaningful learning of new knowledge since, in spite of being socially constructed, they integrate student's cognitive structure. Aiming to investigate social representations of quantum physics that pervade the academic environment, a research study was carried out comparing this kind of knowledge among engineering freshman students in Brazil and Argentina. Multidimensional scaling techniques were used to analyse data gathered with a Numerical Word Association Test (NWAT). In addition, a Vergès' Table was constructed from data collected with a Written Word Association Test (WWAT) in order to identify the elements that compose the nucleus and the peripheral zone of those possible social representations. In both groups the associations are closely connected with General Physics, as it could expected from freshman students. Having social representations of physics topics it is possible to search the prevalence of scientific concepts among student's groups. Through this paper with expected to stress the relevance of the social representations theory for research in physics teaching.
