- Abstract
Introduction: Every day more orthodontists face an important reality - the demand of patients for outstanding aesthetic results. For this demand to be met it is necessary that all diagnostic tools are known and used. The midlines are important components in facial aesthetics and harmony. The coordination of these midlines (facial, dental and geometric) is a goal to be established in the orthodontic treatment planning. Objective: To describe and clarify the differences between the facial, dental and geometric midlines, how they should participate in orthodontic diagnosis, planning and treatment, and evaluate the influence of the midlines in aesthetic perception. Methods: The facial midline is an imaginary line that runs vertically through the center of the face, splitting it into two halves and is determined by the union of the following points: the median point between the eyebrows and the center of the philtrum. The dental midline is represented by the contact point between the upper central incisors and the lower central incisors. The geometric midline is the geometric center of the circumference of the built arch, and in practice is the dental midline obtained after the dental alignment and leveling. Unfortunately it is not given enough importance to this last analysis, despite its relevance in the diagnosis and treatment. Conclusions: To obtain a pleasing aesthetic it is important to match the midlines. Among them, the geometric midline is not well known by the professionals and is unexplored in the literature.
