"Philosophy for the Ladies": Feminism, Pedagogy, and Natural Philosophy in Charlotte Lennox's Lady's Museum.
- Authors
Sagal, Anna K.
- Abstract
his article re-examines Charlotte Lennox's work in her serial Lady's Museum (1760-61) by placing the periodical in conversation with her novel The Female Quixote (1752), and specifically focusing on the author's pedagogical interests. By drawing on the historical and biographical details of Arabella's study and the historical, geographical, and scientific articles in Lady's Museum, I trace connections between the practices of reading and self-education endorsed within the novel and in the periodical. I argue that Lennox's stance on womens education in both publications represents a more liberal feminist pedagogy than has been traditionally acknowledged. In line with recent criticism in periodical studies, I assert that the mid-century periodical offered distinct educational opportunities for women.
