- Authors
Barbara A. Beijen
- Abstract
The article discusses the significance of including the designation of protected areas in several environmental directives in Europe. The author focuses her discussion on the procedures for the designations of areas Habitats Directive, Wild Birds Directive, Bathing Water Directive and Nitrates Directive. It also explores the different interpretations of the European Commission, European Court of Justice (ECJ), and Member States concerning the designation of areas. It concludes that Member States have interpretations which result in discretion in designating areas that impose limitation in the development of protected areas.
