- Title
California Urban Wildland Interface (UWI) Regulations.
- Abstract
This article reports on the decision of the California State Fire Marshal to move forward with draft fire protection regulations, as of July 2005. The draft fire protection regulations could significantly erode markets for wood building materials in urban wildland interface (UWI) zones. Draft regulations, which will apply to exterior walls, windows and decking, were developed in response to devastating wildfires that ravaged Southern California in 2003. Of particular concern to the wood industry are proposed requirements that building materials used in UWI zones be ignition resistant, a standard that may be difficult for wood products to meet.
