- Abstract
The article offers a retrospective of China-U.S. relations and projects the course of both countries through 2018. It mentions the 30th anniversary of China's "reform and opening" towards diplomatic relations with the U.S. in 1979 and discusses the strategic adjustments that were necessary to dispel ideological and security issues that threatened cooperation. It notes that the during the 1989-1998 period, U.S.-China relations were characterized by positive economic and cultural exchanges, and a mutual recognition of the countries' role in ensuring world peace. The article cites China's attainment of economic success by 1999-2008, and its cooperative position with the U.S. against terrorism.
