- Abstract
El presente artículo revisa la evolución de los patrones de crecimiento de la economía peruana en las últimas cinco décadas. Para ello utiliza cifras globalmente consistentes preparadas por el Banco Mundial. Su primer hallazgo implica reconocer que -usando como predictor o indicador de desarrollo económico la evolución temporal de la razón entre el PBI por habitante peruano respecto a su similar estadounidense y otros índices- desde una perspectiva "largoplacista" el crecimiento económico peruano de la última década resulta aún insuficiente para siquiera remontar su valor relativo de cinco décadas atrás. De hecho, el aludido índice de desarrollo retrocede en más de tres puntos porcentuales en el periodo analizado. Estirando el razonamiento, el Perú se ha subdesarrollado en comparación con el punto de partida. En estas observaciones, el presente artículo trata de escudriñar en las causas de este retroceso y en los retos implícitos en persistir creciendo y alcanzar mayores estándares de desarrollo económico. Finalmente, y contraponiendo el caso peruano y el singapurense, encontramos que las diferencias de performance se estructuran claramente en disimilitudes en los comportamientos de ciertas variables claves, como los coeficientes de apertura comercial, exportación, exportación de servicios y captación de capitales foráneos.
