- Abstract
The article explores the intersection of race and class in two Kansas City, Missouri schools between the years 1954 and 1974 through the experiences of female African American professors. Their stories are examined in the historical and socioeconomic context of integrated institutions after the Brown vs. the Board of Education court decision. The policy of open access and enrollment at the Loretto Academy is described. The experience of attending Paseo High School as part of the first generation of black students to be integrated into Kansas City's public school system is recounted. How enduring ideologies about race, ethnicity, and class had a lasting impact on teaching methodologies, codes of discipline, and administrative policy is discussed.
