- Abstract
The territory where El Salvador is located is part of the southeastern periphery of Mesoamerica and since ancient times human populations that have inhabited this region have been affected by climatic changes and natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions. The local and regional social changes that have resulted from these eruptions have been evident in the archaeological record that has shown us the behavior of these societies and individuals when confronting these type of events. Volcanic activity has continued until recent times with the eruption of Santa Ana volcano only seven years ago. This article presents two eruptions that have affected prehispanic societies in the territory where El Salvador is located today: the eruptions of Ilopango and Loma Caldera volcanoes. We also partially explain the way societies were affected and how the archaeological record has helped us to understand their behavior.
