- Title
Anna Called Anisia - Facts and Interpretations.
- Authors
Georgieva, Sashka
- Abstract
The article discusses the identity of Tsaritsa Anna of Bulgaria, noting her presence in much of Bulgarian historiography. The author explains the dominant view that Anna was first a wife of Bulgarian Tsar Kaloyan, and then married his successor, Tsar Boril, along with her association with Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Asen II. The notion that Anna changed her name to Anisia after becoming a nun is explained, as are mentions of her in the Synodicon of Tsar Boril. The author concludes that Anna was the wife of Ivan Asen II, who married her while in exile and divorced her after ascending the throne. The author is fairly critical of ideas regarding Anna found on the Internet.
