- Title
Shylock Meets Palestine: Rethinking Shakespeare in Abdelkader Benali's Yasser.
- Authors
APOLLONI, JESSICA
- Abstract
The article critiques Abdelkader Benali's play "Yasser" adapted from William Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice." It explains that "Yasser" is a monologue focused on the character Yasser Mansour, a Palestinian actor contemplating what it means to play the role of the Jewish Shylock, after growing up near the Israeli-Palestinian border in the 1980s Intifada. It highlights "Yasser's" ability to show the complexities of identity, multiculturalism and geopolitics from an individual perspective.
