- Authors
Olds, Suzanne A.; Harrell, Deborah A.; Valente, Michael E.
- Abstract
The article presents a classroom activity called "Get a Grip!" for middle school students. The activity is a problem-based unit that takes students in the role of engineers to design and develop prosthetic arms from common materials. They are challenged to create arms that can accomplish tasks requiring fine motor control and strength. It was found out that the students' participation in the project had increased their understanding and interest in engineering, their enjoyment of science, and their knowledge on simple machines.
