- Authors
Ayala, Carlos
- Abstract
The article provides information on the formative assessment guideposts which are designed to determine the students' capabilities and which include written tests, performance tasks, formal questioning, or teacher observations incorporated in a unit of study. The first guidepost is thinking beyond the test where the formative assessment offers feedback to a student while the summative assessment lets teachers think about testing and grading. The second guidepost involves learning where formative assessments are used to inform teaching and learning. The third guidepost discusses that formative assessment feedback must be timely and precise in order to be efficient. Thus, learning can be motivated by the degree to which formative assessments are utilized.
