- Abstract
Don Quixote is a book that challenges the literary traditions that had existed up until the time of its publication. Not only that. It is not possible to understand the development of Spanish literature from 1605 onwards without taking into consideration the influence that Cervantes’ works had on his peers and the authors to come. Don Quixote is fun to read, but it is also full of secrets. It is an enormously complex book, which experiments with different narrative models, conveys core values and in which the opposition between history and poetry becomes the constant theoretical nucleus. Fiction and reality are in Don Quixote the two sides of the same coin, to the point where, in Cervantes’ story, the plausible becomes true.
