- Abstract
Sin« their discovery, antidepressants have been successfully used in the treatment of major depressive disorder. These agents are being increasingly prescribed to treat other psychiatric illnesses, anxiety spectrum disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and eating disorders, and many of these agents have Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for these indications. The selective serotonin uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and newer antidepressants are considered first-line agents because of their demonstrated safety and tolerability, although the older tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) are still prescribed for certain conditions or following the failure of a first-line agent. Table 1 below compiles literature reporting on the use of antidepressants for the treatment of psychiatric illness, excluding major depressive disorder. A treatment algorithm and accompanying rationale are also provided.
