- Abstract
A major factor influencing the profitability of wind projects, after the construction budget, is the cost of operation and maintenance (O&M). Inadequate reserves or cost provisions of a poorly planned O&M budget can compromise project operability and trigger significant revenue losses of even a well-designed project. O&M is therefore to be considered as a key element to help ensure component longevity and project success. Though advances in wind turbine technology have lessened the burden of O&M on projects, wind farms still require a sound O&M programme to achieve expected levels of performance and consistent revenues. This paper will highlight the main elements to be considered in developing an O&M plan, while showing the evolution of various O&M budget costs as a function of advances in technology. Hélimax's findings are mostly based on publicly available O&M history in Europe, though relevant parameters relative to harsh climate will also be discussed.
