- Title
Translations and Intertexts in Preti Taneja's We That Are Young: A Pedagogical Commentary.
- Authors
Lahiri, Ray
- Abstract
This piece examines the intertextual dynamics of Preti Taneja's "translation" of King Lear , act I, scene iv in We That Are Young. This passage, structurally Shakespearean and voiced through a translated hymn from the Rigveda, reactivates the colonial history of interpretation and contestation that has shaped both Shakespeare and Vedas. Such moments of intertextual abundance and proliferation offer pedagogically rich opportunities to dwell upon the history of translation and canonicity. Through the medium of commentary, students may examine the situatedness of their own engagement with Shakespeare—and the contemporary ethical and political binds to which Taneja has addressed her work.
