- Abstract
This article discusses the results of a case study conducted in an English secondary school, focusing on the perspectives of English and mathematics teachers regarding the impact of high-stakes GCSE exams on their relationships with students. The study reveals that the emphasis on exam performance has negative effects on the well-being of both teachers and students, as it influences teaching practices and limits individual student care. Teachers feel pressured to teach to the test, resulting in fewer learning opportunities and a less positive classroom environment. The study raises concerns about the nature and consequences of GCSE exams, highlighting the need to consider assessment methods and their impact on teachers, students, and society.
