- Title
Translating Drama: A Critical Outlook.
- Abstract
This research studies the topic of translating drama through a critical lens and related theoretical and applied issues. The most important of these issues lie in the methodological and theoretical difficulties facing this process and the lack of works produced on this winding path. The research is divided into an introduction that defines and denotes the vocabulary of the title to open the discussion, and sub-sections with sub-headings dealing with the following issues, respectively: translation of literary and dramatic terminology, the issue of the relationship between dramatic text and presentation, and aspects of the relationship between translation and drama. In the meantime, the research refers to the history of this relationship with regard to Arab drama and provides theoretical points related to the translation of dramatic texts, the nature and difficulties of this translation, and the difference in this nature from one work to another, with reference to Arab and world plays. The discussion revolves around the relationship between the literary-dramatic text and the live performance and its technical ramifications, and the processes that arise after writing, publishing, and presenting the text on stage, with what it holds in terms of evaluations, judgments, theoretical and practical criticism, and other special issues arising from the drama translation process. This research follows a descriptive and analytical method that is not without historical dimensions in some aspects. It concludes that the reading of a dramatic text is only completed by translating it into a stage performance.
