- Abstract
This article discusses and compares the trials of Phryne, a courtesan from Ancient Greece, and Brunegild (also known as Brunhilda), a Visigothic princess from the 6th or 7th century. It examines the trials as a microcosm of gender roles in society at the time, with an emphasis on male superiority over women. The author analyzes the belief of natural laws regarding women's inferior place in society. He provides a biography of each of these women and studies the writings of Venancio Fortunato (Venantius Fortunatus), a Latin poet in the Merovingian court, about the relationship between Brunegild and her husband Merovingian king Sigibert.
