- Abstract
The author discusses Easter Island. He considers the request from the the government of Rapa Nui, what Easter Island is locally known as, for the British Museum to return Hoa Hakanai’a, a statue or moai removed from the island in 1868 by British Commodore Richard Powell of the HMS Topaze. It also considers the book "The Beginning of Infinity," by David Deutsch, the television series "State of the Planet," and a 1972 television show hosted by Jacob Bronowski which pointed out the island's desertification as a result of trees removed by inhabitants.
