- Abstract
The article discusses late-13 and early 14th-century papal chaplains, those assigned to serve at the Pope's chapel of San Lorenzo, the Sancta Sanctorum chapel in the Lateran Palace, Rome. Topics include Popes Nicholas IV, Boniface VIII, and Benedict XI, the diplomatic nature of assigning papal chaplains to foreign courts such as that of King Edward I of England, funding for the Crusades, and the use of men from varied field such as curia list scholars, church law scholars, and men known for their rhetorical skill as chaplains is explored.
