- Abstract
The article presents a history of the Balkan Wars, a series of conflicts in the South-Eastern Europe prior to the outbreak of the First World War. Particular focus is given to the impact of nationalism on the efforts of Montenegro, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Greece in fighting for independence from the Ottoman Empire in the First and Second Balkan wars. The article discusses the political influence of the Young Turk coup within the Ottoman Empire, examines regional alliances in the Balkan region during the conflicts, and chronicles the role of Russia and Austria-Hungary in the wars. The article also discusses how military tactics used in the conflict, such as flanking and the use of machine guns, were influential in the coming World War I.
