- Abstract
This article analyzes the struggle and contribution of rural women workers in Brazil based on the actions of women in CONTAG, with a focus on the March of the Daisies and its dialog with feminism(s). We focus on the history of the organization of rural women workers in Brazil and understanding how this strengthened CONTAG's unionism and the feminist struggle. Because the March of the Daisies was a milestone for the mobilization of women in CONTAG's union movement, in partnership with various women's and feminist organizations in Brazil, understanding it is central to understanding CONTAG during its 60-year history. To do so, we conducted a qualitative study, analyzing documents and semi-structured interviews with leaders of CONTAG, the March of the Daisies, and partner organizations, as well as government representatives who dialogued with these struggles and demands at various points. This reveals how the growing organization of women in rural, water, and forest settings brought greater visibility and political recognition to CONTAG's trade unionism, both inside and outside the movement, with the political strength of the March of the Daisies becoming a national and international reference for the mobilization of rural women and CONTAG's largest mass action. It was also possible to identify how the women in CONTAG were strengthened by feminism(s) and how these feminisms were strengthened by the struggle of women in rural trade unions.
