- Abstract
The article focuses on the historiographic debate about urban violence in the Late Roman Empire and the June 408 riots in the town of Calama, North Africa. It analyzes the interpretation of religious conflict in the Late Roman Empire, points out the importance of studying these instances of collective violence in terms of popular social elements and explores the involvement of Christians and pagans in the Calama riots. The author also outlines and critiques various interpretive models and their perspectives on the role of the populace in religious violence.
