- Abstract
The article discusses a historical research on the moral formation of Portuguese men in the 15th century, focusing on the teachings on moral values of the Catholic Church. Special attention is given to the discipline of the body, particularly regarding the sexuality of married men. Topics addressed include the social role of men in Portugal at that time, the role of confession in the introjection of moral values, and the notion of the ideal gentleman as a reflection of the moral example of the nobility. A theoretical framework is presented, which includes the work of French philosopher Michel Foucault, the work of German sociologist Norbert Elias, and Portuguese documents from the 15th century.
