- Abstract
The article presents information regarding the academic career and upbringing of Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI). The article begins with a description of his adolescence, his interest in the church at an early age, and the effects of Nazism and the Second World War on his time in seminary in the city of Freising, Germany. It presents excerpts of letters written by Ratzinger to former teachers, including Alfred Läpple and Theodor Steinbüchel. The article concludes with Ratzinger’s relationship with colleague and educator Romano Guardini.
