- Title
Genetics and extinction of island endemics: the importance of historical perspectives.
- Authors
Groombridge, J.
- Abstract
The article comments on studies about the causes of extinction of endemic island species. The author pointed out that genetic factors such as inbreeding and loss of genetic diversity play a role in the increased susceptibility to extinction of island endemics. Several reasons are cited for the different explanations about the greater extinction probability of island endemics. They also suggested the need to understand the interplay between drivers of extinction across different timescales.
