- Abstract
This article examines the labor migration of Macedonians to the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It argues that the Atlantic Ocean continued to be a significant source of labor supply to North America even after the abolition of slavery. The text explores the racial and economic hierarchies created through the movement of people and the distribution of capital during this time. It discusses an investigation in Steelton, Pennsylvania in 1908 that exposed the exploitation of Macedonian migrants by brokers and led to the deportation of many. The article also highlights the resilience and agency of these migrants, challenging stereotypes of their vulnerability. It emphasizes the complexity of the relationships between exploitative bosses and exploited workers and suggests reimagining Macedonians as a mixture of migrants, nomads, and artisans to gain a different perspective on their experiences.
